Do not panic. Lost items in Korea are often handed to the place where they were found, to a transport operator, or to the police.

Choose where you lost it, or what you lost, to see what to do next.

First: What should I do?

1. Contact the place or operator right away

Items are often kept by the place where they were found before they move to the police. Give them as much detail as you can:

  • โ€ข Item type
  • โ€ข Color and brand
  • โ€ข Distinguishing features
  • โ€ข Date and approximate time
  • โ€ข Where you think you lost it
  • โ€ข Your name
  • โ€ข A phone number or email where you can be reached
Tip
A photo of the item makes identification much easier.
2. ๐Ÿ”Ž Search Koreaโ€™s official lost-property system

Found items reported to the police and many organizations can be searched on Police Civil Service 24. Since 26 January 2026 the former Lost112 search is part of this service. Use Found Item Search to see whether your item has been turned in, and Lost Item Report if it has not.

Cannot use the Korean website? Visit a police station, police substation or police box, or ask the Korea Travel Helpline for language help.

Where did you lose it?

๐Ÿš‡ I lost something on the subway

If you notice right away, tell station staff before you leave the station. Try to remember:

Line
Example: Line 2
Direction
Example: toward Hongik University
Station
Where you got on and off
Time
Roughly when you boarded and left
Train car
Example: car 3, near the second door
  • โ€ข Just noticed โ†’ go to the nearest station information office
  • โ€ข Already left the station โ†’ contact the operator or the station where you got off
  • โ€ข Hours or days later โ†’ search Police Civil Service 24 too
Important
Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Gwangju and other cities have different subway operators. Lost-property procedures and storage places can differ. Busan Transportation Corporation joined the Police Civil Service 24 lost-property system on 26 January 2026.

๐Ÿš† I lost something on a KTX or other train

Still on the train: tell the conductor or train crew immediately.

Already left the train: have these ready, then contact the railway operator or the station lost-property office.

  • โ€ข Train number
  • โ€ข Departure station
  • โ€ข Destination
  • โ€ข Seat number
  • โ€ข Date and time
  • โ€ข Description of the item

๐Ÿš• I left something in a taxi

Try to identify the taxi first.

Used a taxi app?

Open your ride history, check the driver, vehicle and times, then contact the taxi through the app if that option exists.

Paid by card?

Your card payment history or receipt shows the ride time and fare, which can help identify the taxi.

Remember the license plate?

Keep the full plate number. It helps a lot when you contact the taxi company.

In Seoul, the Dasan Call Center can help you find the right office. Follow the language menu for foreign-language help. Dasan: 120 From outside Seoul or on some phones: 02-120

Cannot identify the taxi? Search Police Civil Service 24, because items handed in by drivers can appear there later.

๐ŸšŒ I lost something on a bus

  • โ€ข Bus number
  • โ€ข Where you got on
  • โ€ข Where you got off
  • โ€ข Direction
  • โ€ข Boarding time
  • โ€ข Exit time
  • โ€ข Where you were sitting

Right after it happens, contact the bus operator or ask at a nearby transport information center. Not sure which company? Check the bus number and route in your map app first. Unclaimed items may later move to the police.

โœˆ๏ธ I lost something at an airport

Work out where you lost it first, because different organizations handle different places.

Aircraft and checked bags
Items lost inside an aircraft are normally handled by the airline, not the airport Lost & Found office. Missing checked baggage goes to the airline baggage service counter, ideally before you leave the arrivals area. Keep your baggage tag and boarding pass.

๐Ÿจ I lost something at a hotel, restaurant or store

Contact the business first. Larger businesses often keep found items for a while before passing them on.

  • โ€ข Date and time of your visit
  • โ€ข Reservation name, if any
  • โ€ข Table, room or order details
  • โ€ข Description of the item
  • โ€ข A photo of the item, if you have one

๐Ÿ“ I lost something on the street

  1. 1Retrace your route if it is safe to do so.
  2. 2Search the police found-item database.
  3. 3If it does not appear, file a lost-item report.
  4. 4Check again later. A found item can take time to be passed on and registered.

What did you lose?

๐Ÿ›‚ I lost my passport

  1. 1Contact the place where you may have lost it: airport, hotel, station, taxi company or restaurant.
  2. 2Check the police lost-property search. It may already have been handed in.
  3. 3Contact your embassy or consulate about a replacement passport, an emergency travel document, the documents you need and whether a police loss report is required.
Important
Do not assume a photo or photocopy of your passport can be used to travel abroad. Requirements differ by country.

Lost it at Incheon Airport? Foreign passports found there may be kept for a limited time before being sent to the relevant embassy, so contact the airport Lost & Found office as soon as you can.

๐Ÿ“ฑ I lost my phone

  1. 1Try calling it.
  2. 2Use your phoneโ€™s location service: Find My on Apple, or the device-finding service on Android.
  3. 3Contact the place where you lost it.
  4. 4Search the police lost-property system.
  5. 5Contact your mobile carrier if needed.

If it holds banking or payment apps, consider securing those accounts too.

๐Ÿ’ณ I lost my wallet or cards

  1. 1Freeze or block your cards through your bank or card issuer first.
  2. 2Contact the place where you lost the wallet.
  3. 3Search the police lost-property system.
  4. 4File a lost-item report if needed.

If your passport or ID was inside, follow the passport steps as well.

๐Ÿงณ My checked luggage is missing

Missing checked baggage is usually handled by the airline, not the airportโ€™s ordinary Lost & Found office. Go to the airline baggage service counter before you leave the arrivals area if you can.

  • โ€ข Baggage claim tag
  • โ€ข Boarding pass
  • โ€ข Flight number
  • โ€ข Description of the bag
  • โ€ข Your contact details

Already left the airport? Contact the airline directly.

๐Ÿšจ Lost or stolen?

I simply lost something
  • โ€ข The place or transport operator
  • โ€ข Police lost-property search
  • โ€ข Lost-item report
I believe someone stole it

Call the police. Use 112 when a crime has happened, you are in danger or you need police help right away. Do not use the ordinary lost-property process instead of reporting a theft.

Police: 112

Before You Leave Korea

Departure is close and your item has not turned up?

  1. 1Keep your lost-item report or reference number.
  2. 2Leave an email address that works abroad.
  3. 3Ask whether someone else may collect the item for you.
  4. 4Ask whether delivery within Korea or abroad is possible.
  5. 5Do not assume every kind of item can be shipped abroad.
Some airports and organizations offer delivery or authorized pickup, but the rules depend on the item and the organization. Gimpo and Gimhae airports have offered courier delivery of found items, so ask.

Remember

  1. 1Contact the place where you lost it.
  2. 2Search Koreaโ€™s official police found-item system.
  3. 3Report the loss if needed.
  4. 4For theft or immediate danger, call 112.
  5. 5If language is a problem, call 1330.

Lost-property procedures, office hours and contact details can change. Check the official organization before you visit a Lost & Found office.
