How to stay online in Korea: eSIM, SIM, pocket Wi-Fi, free Wi-Fi and the apps that work best.

Start here: which option is right for me?

Most travelers want one answer: what is best for me? Find your situation in the table.

Traveling with 2 or more peoplePocket Wi-Fi or eSIM
You need a Korean phone numberA Korean SIM or eSIM with voice/SMS

You also use a laptop or tabletPocket Wi-Fi
  • Most travelers: eSIM is the easiest choice.
  • Need a Korean phone number? Choose a SIM/eSIM with voice/SMS.
  • Traveling with several people? Consider Pocket Wi-Fi.

Why you need internet the moment you land

You will often need data right at the airport, for example to:

  • Check your hotel location on a map
  • Search for places in NAVER Map
  • Check the airport rail or bus
  • Call a taxi
  • Translate signs and messages
  • Check exchange rates
  • Check your bookings
  • Show QR codes
  • Message family and friends

Donโ€™t wait until you arrive to figure out your internet connection.

eSIM, step by step

1. Does my phone support eSIM?

Support depends on the model and the country where you bought the phone. Quick checks:

  • iPhone: iPhone XS / XR and later support eSIM, except models sold in mainland China. Check Settings โ†’ General โ†’ About for โ€œDigital SIMโ€ or an EID number.
  • Samsung Galaxy: many recent models, such as the S20 series and later, support eSIM. Look for โ€œAdd eSIMโ€ in Settings โ†’ Connections โ†’ SIM manager.
  • Google Pixel: many models, from the Pixel 3 onward depending on region, support eSIM. Check Settings โ†’ Network & internet โ†’ SIMs.
  • Other Android phones: look for โ€œAdd eSIMโ€ in the SIM settings, or dial *#06# and see whether an EID number appears.

2. Is my phone unlocked?

Your phone must be unlocked to use a local SIM or eSIM. A phone locked to your home carrier only accepts that carrierโ€™s SIM cards, so a Korean SIM or eSIM will not work, even if the phone supports eSIM. Ask your carrier whether your phone is unlocked and have it unlocked before you travel, because this can take a few days.

3. When to install it

  1. 1Before departure: buy the eSIM.
  2. 2Install it while you are connected to Wi-Fi. The QR code or app needs internet.
  3. 3Do not delete your home SIM.
  4. 4After landing: turn the Korean eSIM on.
  5. 5Select the Korean eSIM for Mobile Data.
  6. 6Turn on Data Roaming for the Korean eSIM line if the seller tells you to.
  7. 7Turn off Data Roaming on your home SIM line to avoid roaming charges.

Do not remove your home SIM unless you know you no longer need it. It can stay in the phone for calls and texts from home while the Korean eSIM provides your data.

4. Data-only eSIM or a Korean phone number?

Data-only eSIM

Internet only: maps, translation, KakaoTalk, WhatsApp, Instagram and web search. No Korean phone number, and you cannot receive Korean SMS.

eSIM or SIM with voice/SMS

Data plus a Korean phone number: you can make calls and receive SMS.

Do I need a Korean phone number?
  • โœ“ No: a data-only eSIM is usually enough.
  • โœ“ Yes: choose a Korean SIM or eSIM with voice/SMS.

Many travel eSIMs are data-only, so read the product page before you buy.

When might you need a Korean phone number?

  • Some booking services
  • Some identity verification steps
  • Booking by phone
  • Food delivery
  • Signing up for some Korean services
  • Talking on the phone with Korean businesses

Not every app needs one. KakaoTalk, for example, can be registered with an overseas phone number. Some services may require a Korean number, so check before you rely on it.

iPhone and Android settings

iPhone
Settings โ†’ Cellular (or Mobile Data) โ†’ Cellular Data โ†’ choose your Korean line
Android
Settings โ†’ Connections โ†’ SIM manager โ†’ Mobile data (on other phones: Settings โ†’ Network & internet โ†’ SIMs)

Installing the eSIM and using it for mobile data are two separate steps. Menu names differ a little by phone model and software version.

SIM card

Travel SIM cards are sold at the arrivals hall of Incheon and Gimpo airports, and pre-ordered ones can be collected at airport counters.

  • Works on phones that do not support eSIM
  • Some cards include a Korean number for calls and SMS
  • Easy to buy at the airport, with staff to help
  • You must swap the card, so keep your home SIM safe
  • You may queue at the counter after a long flight
  • You need a SIM ejector pin to open the tray

If you need a Korean phone number, check that the plan includes voice/SMS.

Pocket Wi-Fi

A pocket Wi-Fi router creates a Wi-Fi network that several devices can share. You rent it, often at the airport, and return it before you leave.

  • Several people share one connection
  • Connects many devices: phones, laptop and tablet
  • One more device to carry
  • The battery needs charging
  • If your group splits up, only the person holding the router has internet
  • You must return it, and a lost device may be charged to you
  • 2 to 4 people moving together: Pocket Wi-Fi
  • Traveling alone, or each person on their own: eSIM

Roaming from your home carrier

Roaming is the easiest option if you do not want to change any settings: there is nothing to buy or install. Check your carrierโ€™s daily price first, because roaming can be expensive.

How much data do I need?

Travel styleRoughly
Maps and web search1โ€“2 GB per day
Social media and photo uploads2โ€“3 GB per day
Video streaming3 GB or more per day
Heavy useConsider an unlimited plan

โ€œUnlimitedโ€ does not always mean full speed. Many plans slow down after a daily limit, and the details differ by product, so read the product page.

Can I use my phone as a hotspot?

If you want to share data with a laptop or another phone, check that the eSIM allows hotspot (tethering). Some travel eSIMs restrict it.

Free Wi-Fi in Korea

Free Wi-Fi is available at airports, subway and train stations and at certain bus stops. It is fine for light use and as a backup, but it works best as a supplement to mobile data.

Network names to look for

  • Public WiFi Free
  • Public WiFi Secure (encrypted, for devices that support it)
  • SEOUL_Secure (Seoul)

Choose the network, open your browser and follow the sign-in page: accept the terms and press connect.

For SEOUL_Secure, the Seoul Metropolitan Government gives the ID โ€œseoulโ€ and the password โ€œseoulโ€. On Android choose PEAP and โ€œDo not validateโ€ for the CA certificate; on iPhone trust the certificate when asked.

Some networks run by individual carriers ask for a Korean phone number. If a hotspot asks for one, switch to another network.

Avoid sensitive activities on public Wi-Fi

Avoid
  • Online banking
  • Changing important passwords
  • Entering credit card details
  • Sending sensitive personal information
Fine to do
  • Maps
  • Searching for tourist information
  • Messaging
  • Web search

Turn off automatic connection to open networks, and use a VPN if you must use sensitive services.

Apps to install before you go

Important for first-time visitors

Google Maps is useful for finding places, but navigation in Korea can be limited.

Install NAVER Map before your trip. KakaoMap is also a useful alternative.

How do I call a taxi in Korea?

k.ride: made by Kakao Mobility for visitors. It works in English and other languages, lets you sign in with Google, Apple or Facebook, accepts overseas cards and has live translation to talk with the driver. It usually costs a little extra.
Kakao T: the standard Korean taxi app, with an English interface. Signing up and paying with an overseas card can be harder for visitors, so set it up before you need it.
  1. 1Install the app.
  2. 2Sign up.
  3. 3Allow location access.
  4. 4Add a payment method.
  5. 5Enter your destination.
  6. 6Show the driver the address in Korean.

Save your hotelโ€™s Korean address, not just its name.

Useful Apps

Be ready for when the internet drops

  • A screenshot of your hotel address
  • Flight and booking details saved on your phone
  • Addresses of the places you will visit
  • How to get from the airport to your hotel
  • Passport and booking information saved offline
  • Offline maps and translation packs downloaded in advance

Take screenshots of important information before you leave the airport.

Charging

Internet is useless when your phone battery is dead.

  • Carry a power bank in your carry-on, with the terminals covered.
  • Bring a charging cable that fits your phone (USB-C or Lightning).
  • A pocket Wi-Fi router has a battery too and needs charging.
  • Charge at airports and cafรฉs whenever you can.

Korea uses 220 V and plugs with two round pins. See Electricity on Before You Go.

Before You Go

Before you fly: a 10-minute checklist

If your internet does not work

My eSIM does not work

  1. 1Turn Airplane Mode off.
  2. 2Turn Mobile Data on.
  3. 3Select the Korean eSIM for Mobile Data.
  4. 4Check Data Roaming for the eSIM line.
  5. 5Check the APN settings in the sellerโ€™s instructions.
  6. 6Restart the phone.
  7. 7If it still fails, contact the seller.

My SIM card does not work

  1. 1Take the SIM out and put it back in.
  2. 2Restart the phone.
  3. 3Check that your phone is unlocked.
  4. 4Check the APN settings.
  5. 5Ask at a telecom counter in the airport.

Wi-Fi does not connect

  1. 1Forget the network and connect again.
  2. 2Open your browser to see the sign-in page.
  3. 3Try another network if one asks for a Korean phone number.

Tell the two problems apart: if mobile data works but Wi-Fi does not, it is a Wi-Fi problem; if neither works, check your eSIM or SIM.
