Shopping ยท Updated 2026-10-07 ยท 8 min read

What do you want to do?

Shopping in Korea is much more than department stores. You can browse K-beauty in Myeongdong, find independent fashion in Hongdae, shop for clothes late at night in Dongdaemun, look for crafts in Insadong, explore traditional markets, or spend the evening among cafรฉs, restaurants and entertainment districts. Many shopping areas stay lively into the evening, so shopping and nightlife combine easily.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Where should I shop?

Myeongdong

Best for: First-time visitors and K-beauty

One of Seoulโ€™s easiest shopping districts for international visitors. Cosmetics shops, fashion stores, department stores and restaurants sit in a walkable area, so you can compare several skincare and beauty brands in one trip. Many stores in major tourist shopping areas take part in the tourist tax-refund program, but eligibility varies by store.

Hongdae

Best for: Fashion, youth culture and nightlife

By day: fashion boutiques, accessory shops, lifestyle stores and cafรฉs. In the evening it becomes one of Seoulโ€™s best-known entertainment areas, with restaurants, live music, karaoke and bars. Good if you want shopping, dinner and nightlife without changing neighborhoods.

  1. 4:00 PM Shopping and cafรฉs
  2. 6:30 PM Korean dinner
  3. 8:00 PM Street performances or shopping
  4. 10:00 PM+ Karaoke, bars or late-night cafรฉs

Dongdaemun

Best for: Fashion and late-night shopping

A huge fashion and commercial district that combines wholesale markets, retail malls and specialty stores. Some parts keep long hours, but opening hours differ a lot between buildings and shops, so do not assume every mall stays open all night. Check the specific mall or shop.

Insadong

Best for: Traditional Korea and souvenirs

Look here for ceramics, traditional stationery, calligraphy products, handmade crafts, tea and decorative or traditional-style gifts. It pairs well with nearby palaces, Bukchon and Jongno.

Gangnam, Apgujeong and Cheongdam

Best for: Premium shopping and designer fashion

A very different experience from Hongdae or Myeongdong: luxury boutiques, premium Korean brands, department stores, beauty clinics and trend-driven restaurants and cafรฉs. Choose it if premium shopping matters more than bargains.

Itaewon

Best for: International food and nightlife

One of Seoulโ€™s most internationally oriented neighborhoods, with shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. Choose it if your evening is about international dining and nightlife more than shopping.

Seongsu

Best for: Trend-led fashion and cafรฉs

Popular for trend-led fashion, concept stores and cafรฉs. Hours and shops change quickly, so check before you go.

Traditional markets

Best for: Food, snacks and everyday market culture

Seoul has several traditional markets (for example Namdaemun and Gwangjang) for food, snacks, local products and everyday Korean market culture. Some stalls prefer cash, so carry a little Korean won.

Shop hours change often, so check the exact place on Naver Map or KakaoMap before you go. Essential Apps โ†’

Paying for shopping

Cards are widely used in department stores, shopping malls, convenience stores, restaurants, chain cafรฉs and tourist areas. Some market stalls and very small shops may prefer cash. Carry at least one physical card plus a small amount of Korean won, and do not rely on a single card, because a foreign card can be declined.

Payment Problems โ†’

๐Ÿ’ธ Tax-free shopping in Korea

1. Duty-free shopping

Taxes are already taken off the price. Duty-free stores are found at airports and in some downtown locations.

2. Tax refund shopping

You buy an eligible item from a participating store, pay the price including tax, and get part of the tax back. Refunds can be immediate at the store, or at a downtown counter, a kiosk or the airport.

Who can get a tourist tax refund?
  • โ€ข A non-Korean visitor staying in Korea for less than six months
  • โ€ข Buying from a participating tax-refund store
  • โ€ข Goods that are new, unopened and unused
  • โ€ข Taking the goods out of Korea within three months of the purchase

Some overseas Koreans can qualify under separate conditions.

Current published limits (KTO)
  • โ€ข Minimum purchase: โ‚ฉ15,000 per transaction
  • โ€ข Immediate refund: single transaction โ‚ฉ15,000โ€“โ‚ฉ999,999
  • โ€ข Immediate refund total for the trip: up to โ‚ฉ5,000,000
  • โ€ข Downtown refund booth: up to โ‚ฉ6,000,000 per receipt

Limits can change. Information last verified: 2026-10-07. Check the official page

โšก Immediate tax refund

Look for a TAX REFUND or TAX FREE sign.

  1. 1Tell the cashier you want a tourist tax refund.
  2. 2Show your passport if asked.
  3. 3The system checks your eligibility.
  4. 4If the purchase qualifies, the refundable tax is deducted straight away.
๐Ÿงพ Regular tax refund
  1. 1Shop at a participating store.
  2. 2Ask for the tax-refund document. A normal receipt alone may not be enough.
  3. 3Keep your passport, the refund document and the goods until the procedure is done.
  4. 4Complete the refund downtown, at a kiosk, through a mobile service, or at your departure airport or port.
โœˆ๏ธ At the airport
  1. Boarding pass
  2. Tax-refund kiosk or customs
  3. Show the goods if asked
  4. Check baggage
  5. Security and immigration
  6. Receive or complete the refund
Do not put the goods into checked baggage before any required customs step. The official order is: get your boarding pass without checking bags, show the goods and receipts to customs for the export stamp, check your bags, then go to the refund counter or kiosk with your passport and receipts. Allow extra time, and follow the signs and staff at your airport.
How much will I get back?

You usually do not get back the full 10% VAT. Processing fees and the refund structure reduce it, and the amount depends on the refund operator and the purchase. A purchase of โ‚ฉ100,000 does not mean a โ‚ฉ10,000 refund.

Does the store offer a tax refund?

Enter an amount to see a rough result.

โš ๏ธ Common mistakes
  • โŒ โ€œEvery store offers a refund.โ€ No. Look for a participating Tax Refund or Tax Free store.
  • โŒ โ€œA normal receipt is always enough.โ€ Not necessarily. Ask for the required tax-refund document.
  • โŒ โ€œI always get 10% back.โ€ No. Fees and the refund structure reduce the actual refund.
  • โŒ โ€œDuty Free and Tax Refund are the same.โ€ They are different systems.
  • โŒ โ€œServices are always covered.โ€ Most ordinary services, such as restaurants and beauty salons, are not covered by the standard goods tax refund. Some accommodation or medical services may qualify under separate conditions, so check the specific program before you rely on a refund.

๐ŸŒ™ Korea after dark

Korean nightlife is not only clubs and bars. An evening might be dinner, shopping, a dessert cafรฉ, karaoke and a night view or riverside walk. That suits families and visitors who do not drink, too.

Night views

Enjoy city skylines, rivers, bridges and illuminated landmarks.

Late-night food

Try Korean barbecue, fried chicken, street food or late-night restaurants.

Noraebang

Korean karaoke rooms are a common group activity.

Late cafรฉs

Many entertainment districts have cafรฉs open later than typical daytime cafรฉs.

Night shopping

Some districts, especially Dongdaemun and major entertainment areas, stay active after ordinary retail districts close.

Bars and pubs

Popular nightlife districts include parts of Hongdae, Itaewon, Gangnam, Jongno, Busan Seomyeon and Haeundae.

Donโ€™t assume you can take the subway home after midnight

The subway does not run 24 hours, and the last train differs by line, station and day. Before you go out:

  • โ€ข Check the last subway or train in your map app
  • โ€ข Save your accommodation address and its Korean name
  • โ€ข Have a taxi option ready
  • โ€ข Keep enough phone battery for maps and payment

Opening hours of shops and venues change often, so check the exact place on Naver Map or KakaoMap.

๐Ÿš• Taking a taxi at night

Before you leave your accommodation, save the hotel name, the Korean address and its Naver Map or KakaoMap location, so you can show the destination to a driver.
