Can I fly a drone in Korea?
Answer status
YES, WITH REGISTRATION AND PERMITS
Quick answer
Rules apply to tourists too. Drones over 2 kg must be registered, large parts of Seoul and areas near airports and the DMZ need prior approval, and aerial photography needs its own permit. Three drone parks allow flying without prior approval.
What you should know
- Drones with a maximum takeoff weight over 2 kg must be registered, even for hobby use.
- Prior approval is needed in airport control zones (9.3 km radius), parts of downtown Seoul, the DMZ and areas near military facilities and nuclear power plants.
- Flying at 150 m or higher needs separate approval, and aerial photography needs its own permit. Night flights and flights beyond line of sight need special approval.
- Free flight zones: Seoul Gwangnaru Hangang Riverside Drone Park, Daejeon Geumgang Riverside Drone Park and Gwangju Yeongsangang Riverside Drone Park.
