🗺️ Jeollanam-do (Namdo): Tidal Flats, Tea Fields, Bamboo and Food
Jeollanam-do, often shortened to Namdo, is less visited than Seoul or Busan yet is one of the best regions for scenery, food and slow-paced travel. Its main sights are spread among Suncheon, Boseong, Damyang and Yeosu, so a short road trip works well. You can also explore the region over several days by train and bus.

Suncheon: wetlands and a living walled town
Suncheon Bay is a large coastal wetland of reed beds and winding tidal channels. It is a Ramsar-listed site and part of the Getbol, Korean Tidal Flats UNESCO World Heritage listing, inscribed in 2021. It is a major stop for migratory birds, and a boardwalk lets you walk through the reeds, ideally in autumn when they turn golden.
Naganeupseong is a Joseon-era walled town where families still live. Its stone walls, roughly 1.4 km long, can be walked, and thatched houses and small shops fill the interior. Both sights are in Suncheon, so combine them in one day.
Boseong and Damyang: tea and bamboo
Boseong is Korea’s best-known tea-growing area. Terraced green tea fields climb the hills, and tastings, green tea ice cream and tea-based dishes are on offer. The Daehan Dawon plantation is the most visited, and early morning mist can be spectacular.
Damyang is known for Juknokwon, a bamboo garden with a walking trail of roughly 2.4 km that feels noticeably cooler than the surroundings. Try Damyang’s grilled short-rib patties (tteokgalbi) and rice steamed in bamboo, often served in a full set of side dishes.
Yeosu: sea views and night scenery
Yeosu, which hosted a World Expo in 2012, is a port city known for its waterfront, seafood and evening scenes. The Yeosu Maritime Cable Car crosses the water between the mainland and Dolsan Island, and clear-floor cabins add to the view.
Seafood such as soy-marinated crab and grilled fish is a specialty, and an evening on the harbor is the highlight.
Getting there and eating well
By train, Honam KTX services from Yongsan or Seoul reach Gwangju-Songjeong in under two hours, and a KTX line reaches Suncheon and Yeosu in roughly two to three hours. From Gwangju, local buses connect to Damyang, and a car makes it easier to link Boseong, Suncheon and Yeosu. Check current timetables on the official Korail site.
Namdo is famous for its lavish tables of many small dishes (hanjeongsik). Ask for a set meal for two or more, and expect fresh seafood, fermented sauces and seasonal vegetables.
