๐Ÿ’ฑ Exchange foreign cash

You can exchange foreign currency at bank counters and authorized exchange services at Korean airports. For most travelers, exchanging only what you need right away is the easiest option.

1

Find a currency exchange counter

Look for signs saying Currency Exchange, Foreign Exchange or a bank name.

2

Check the rate before you exchange

Look at how much KRW you will actually receive, not only the advertised rate.

3

Keep your passport with you

Some exchange services may ask for identification, depending on the transaction and provider.

4

Keep your receipt

It can help if you later want to exchange unused Korean won back.

How much should I exchange?

These are travel-planning suggestions, not official requirements. How much cash you need depends on how you plan to travel.

Airport rates may differ from city exchange services. Compare the amount you would receive before you exchange a large sum.

๐Ÿง Withdraw Korean won from an ATM

Look for an ATM that accepts international cards

  6. 6Check every fee shown on the screen.
  7. 7If currency conversion is offered, review the choice carefully.
  8. 8Take your card, your cash and your receipt.

โš ๏ธ ATM asks: KRW or your home currency?

Usually choose KRW

An ATM or card terminal may offer to convert the transaction into USD, EUR, JPY or your home currency. This is called Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC).

If you choose your home currency, the ATMโ€™s or merchantโ€™s conversion rate and extra markup may apply. If you choose KRW, your card network or issuer converts it under your cardโ€™s terms.

To avoid DCC markup, choose KRW unless you have compared the displayed conversion and deliberately prefer the home-currency option.

If you do not see the rate and fees, or you feel pressured to choose, decline the conversion and tell your card issuer. A machine must process your choice.

What can an ATM withdrawal cost?

  • โ‘ข Foreign exchange fee Your bank or card may charge a currency conversion fee.
  • โ‘ฃ DCC markup Only if you choose or accept home-currency conversion.

Before pressing Confirm, check the total fee shown on the screen.

Before you travel, ask your card issuer whether overseas ATM withdrawals are enabled and what the daily limit is.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my Visa or Mastercard in Korea?

Yes. International cards are widely accepted, although acceptance can vary by merchant.

Should I exchange all my money at the airport?

Usually not. Many visitors use cards for most spending and keep some KRW for situations where cash helps.

Is an airport exchange rate always worse?

Rates vary. Airport exchange is convenient, but compare the amount you receive before exchanging a large sum.

Can I withdraw Korean won with a foreign card?

Often yes, at ATMs that support your card network or international card service. Your issuer must also allow overseas ATM withdrawals.

Why did a Korean ATM reject my card?

Possible reasons include network compatibility, overseas withdrawal restrictions, daily limits, ATM limits or your bankโ€™s security controls.

Should I choose KRW or USD at an ATM?

Choosing KRW normally lets your card network or issuer handle the conversion. Choosing your home currency may involve Dynamic Currency Conversion and an extra markup.

Do I need to declare cash when entering Korea?

Amounts over USD 10,000 equivalent must be declared to Korea Customs.
